Crowns are meant to last for a very long time, which makes them a great option for teeth that may be decayed beyond what a filling can fix. Don’t wait to call your dentist. He or she will likely want to see you within 24 to 48 hours of the incident.

Don’t use temporary cement unless your dentist gives you the go-ahead. He or she might tell you to use an over-the-counter temporary cement until you can come into the dental facility, but it’s important to get those instructions before proceeding. You might have a unique situation in which temporary cement could be harmful.
Do keep your crown clean. Rinse it with water and keep it in a dry space where it won’t get lost while you wait for your dental appointment. Remember to take it with you when you see your dentist, since it’s possible that it might be able to be recemented in place.
Don’t eat chewy or sticky foods, particularly not on the side of the mouth where the crown is missing. The remaining tooth structure that was underneath the crown can be very fragile when it’s exposed, so it’s important to be delicate with it until the situation can be remedied.
Do use over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen or aspirin if you’re experiencing pain.
Don’t panic. Crowns fall out. It happens. Just remember that this can be fixed and you’ll soon have forgotten this even happened.
